Women's
Championship Pairs Final
Last Thursday afternoon Sheryl Glock (S) Barbara Exeter (L) played
Irene Newbold (S) and Tessa Hocking (L). I know it must have been
an enthralling final because Pete Townrow phoned me before the game
was barely over - great draw bowling, clever run shots, good heads,
big crowd, even ?? didn't leave for his usual beer. Congratulations
to Sheryl and Barbara on winning the Championship. Well done Irene
and Tessa, you were worthy opponents.

Club only 2.4.2
Pairs - 7th February Fourteen teams took part in this
event. They could not have asked for a better day and everyone who
took part had an enjoyable afternoon of fun. Thank you Bruce for
making this possible
HB Centre Men's and Women's
Open Pairs
Taradale entered seven teams in the HB Men's Pairs last weekend -
played at Port Ahuriri and Napier. In the HB Women's Pairs (at
Omarunui and Kia Toa) Taradale fielded four teams.
What a contrast in weather from
last week - sun, gentle wind and low 20's (must have been
ideal for the Church Road Winery Concert). Paula Evans and Irene
Newbold both made Post-Section play - well done!
In the men's section we had six
teams who qualified for Day 2 - Frank Grantham & Ross
Hamilton, Phil Young & Jack Philip, Pete Townrow & Dave
Jenkins, Colin Salmon & Chris Downing, John McLaughlin &
Morris Williams, Roly Hoare & Gary deRidder. Because so many
Taradale teams qualified some teams had to play one
another.
When I left Bowls Napier this
afternoon Phil Young and Jack Philip were playing Murray Glassey
& Paul Selby in one semifinal. The other semifinal was between
George Ngamatua (Heretaunga) and Ces Bell (Omarunui)
PS Unofficially the final will be
between Ces Bell / Tony Mears and Murray Glassey / Paul
Selby.

Shirley Pittar
R.I.P.
It was with great sadness we heard that Shirley Pittar, from the
Bay View Bowling Club, passed away during the week. Her interest in
the lives of those around her and cheerful positive approach to
life is an inspiration to all who knew her. We offer our sympathy
to her husband, Tony, and their family, plus their many friends and
bowling club mates. May she rest in peace.

HB Centre Match Report
The latest Match Report from Bowls HB has been posted. There are a
number of interesting points in this report and I would urge you to
click this Match Report
link and have a read. Some of the topics included are:
Women's Open 4's
Women's Open Singles
Mixed 2.4.2 - suggested changes for 2011
Discussion on the format for a possible interclub
next year
Reminder - Other clubs probably need to be reminded that centre
does have first preference for their greens on centre tournament
days. We have been turned down by many clubs when we have made
requests to use their greens. |

QUOTE
Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life
of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by
being shared. |
Etiquette
- Avoid Cliques The
friendliness of Bowls is destroyed by members who form exclusive
groups. Such behaviour is not in the best interests of the club, is
opposed to the etiquette of the game, and should be
avoided. |

FITNESS
FOR BOWLS:
If anyone
says, “You don’t need to be fit to play bowls” don’t believe them.
If you want to do well in club championships or Centre events then
heed the warning and do something about your
fitness.
Most
bowlers develop good leg strength from playing the game but often
neglect the stabilising muscles in the torso which contribute to a
smooth delivery. Good cardiovascular and muscular endurance means
less fatigue, especially at the end of the day. Most bowlers use
walking for exercise to develop fitness but a variety of other
methods (jogging, cycling, swimming) can be used to develop
endurance. Stretching for flexibility increases the muscles’ range
of motion; this promotes ease of delivery and more consistency on
the green.
|
Question:
Occasionally you come across a player who wants to go up and look
at the head after each delivery. When may a player go up and look
at the head?
Appendix
A.4 Restricting the movement of
players during play
After
delivering their first bowl, players will only be allowed to walk
up to the head under the following circumstances.
Singles game - after delivery of their third and fourth bowls.
Pairs game (each player playing four bowls)
the leads: after delivery of their third and fourth bowls; and
the skips: after delivery of their second, third and fourth
bowls.
Triples game (each player playing three bowls)
the leads: after delivery of their third bowl;
the seconds: after delivery of their second and third bowls;
and
the skips: after delivery of each of their bowls.

On the first
day, God created the dog and said: 'Sit all day by the door of your
house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I
will give you a life span of twenty years.'
The dog said:
'That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and
I'll give you back the other ten?' So God agreed.
On the second
day, God created the monkey and said: 'Entertain people, do tricks,
and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life
span.'
The monkey said:
'Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to
perform. How about I give you back ten like the Dog did?' And
God agreed.
On the third
day, God created the cow and said: "You must go into the field with
the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and
give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will give you
a life span of sixty years.'
The cow said:
'That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years..
How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?' And God
agreed again.
On the fourth
day, God created humans and said: 'Eat, sleep, play, marry and
enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty
years.'
But the human
said: 'Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the
forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten
the dog gave back; that makes eighty,
okay?'
'Okay,' said
God, 'You asked for it.'
So that is why
for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves.
For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family.
For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the
grandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch
and bark at everyone.

GALA'S
GETTING CLOSER - March 10th 2010
Please save your old magazines, books and jigsaws. Start potting
your cuttings, preserving season is
near, maybe an extra jar can be put aside for our
stall.
Any odd balls of knitting wool that can be used by our 'crafty
ladies' would be gratefully received. There will be a basket
available in the shed for your donations of
wool. |
